LOLAB VALLEY TO KERAN SECTOR :
Following an early breakfast, we depart for the Keran Sector. Keran is a tehsil in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, India, situated on the bank of the Kishanganga River. The village lies along the Line of Control (LoC) and includes four panchayats: Keran, Mandian, Mandian-A, and Kundian Pathroo.
The neighboring habitation on the Pakistani side is also named Keran. The Kishanganga River, called the Neelum River on the Pakistani side, flows through the village and serves as a natural border between the two areas. Although both sides share the same predominant religion, their social and cultural practices differ significantly. Indian and Pakistani authorities do not permit people from either side to intermingle. Keran village is surrounded by dense forests. Shalabhatu, a village in the Keran sector, is divided between Indian-administered Jammu & Kashmir and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK). In the early 1990s, it was a major infiltration route used by militants. The village has three border posts: Khokhri, Kulari, and Mangerta.
Following the reiteration of the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan in 2021, the village started attracting tourists for the first time, offering a unique view of Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Prior to this, access to the village was restricted to military personnel and locals.
Keran Valley is celebrated for its lush greenery, serene river views, and tranquil ambiance. This haven for nature lovers offers opportunities for hiking, picnicking, and simply basking in the natural beauty. Enjoy a delightful picnic by the Neelum River, accompanied by the soothing sounds of flowing water. Return to the camp for dinner.
